Campbell fails to finish road race

Sixth-time national road race champion Teniel Campbell failed to finish Saturday’s gruelling 180.4-kilometre women’s elite road race at the UCI World Championship Road Race in Canada.

From a field of 177 riders, Campbell, 23rd in the time trial recently, appeared to be hampered by several crashes on the day, her manager Desmond Roberts said.

However, as Campbell was held up in crashes, the Netherlands Demi Vollering cantered to victory in a time of four hours, 45 minutes and 09 seconds, with Poland’s Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney crossing the line in the same time for the second-place finish and resulting silver medal.

Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini completed the silverware collection on the day in four hours, 45 minutes and 13 seconds, with the trio of Marlen Reusser of Switzerland (four hours, 45 minutes and 17 seconds), Juliette Berthet of France (four hours, 45 minutes and 48 seconds), and the Netherlands’ Puck Pieterse completing the top six finishers in a time of four hours, 46 minutes and 45 seconds.

On Friday, Campbell’s compatriot Jadian Neaves also failed to complete the UCI Road Cycling World Championships road race, which comprised a distance of 174 kilometres. Neaves, who dominates local road race events, was among some 60 riders unable to make it to the end of the race.
