Campbell set for another epic shot put showdown

FOLLOWING their epic encounter in the men’s shot put at Sunday’s Rabat Diamond League, the United States’ Payton Otterdahl and Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell will renew their rivalry in the event today at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Campbell, the Olympic Games bronze medallist in the event, had taken the lead with a throw of 21.95 metres on his final throw – then a world lead – before being edged out by the American on his sixth and final attempt with a heave of 21.97m, upstaging the Jamaican for the win and setting a new world lead.

Another exciting battle is expected, as both will be joined by the three medallists from this year’s World Indoor Championships in Nanjing – New Zealand’s Tom Walsh and the United States duo of Roger Steen and Adrian Piperi – with the first 22-metre throw of the season likely.

Another Jamaican, Olympian Danniel Thomas-Dodd, will also be in throwing action as she contests the women’s shot put. Thomas-Dodd is coming off good form in Arizona a week ago, where she won with a throw of 19.15m.

She will face the United States’ Maggie Ewen, who has a season best of 19.53m. The meet record of 19.10m is definitely under threat.

Jamaica’s Omar McLeod, the 2016 Olympic Games men’s 110m hurdles champion, will be in action on the track as he looks to improve on his season’s best of 13.38 seconds, set at the Grand Slam Track meet at the National Stadium in Kingston in early April.
