Camperdown High School’s junior and senior netball teams are enjoying their best start in years in the ISSA urban schoolgirls competition, with both teams unbeaten after four matches each.
The Wayne Stewart-coached squads have been dominating their rivals in Zone D of the competition. Their latest victories came recently as the junior team defeated Edith Dalton James High 43-4, while the senior team blew away Kingston Technical High School 52-1. Both teams have now racked up four straight wins.
Camperdown last won a title in 2015 when the senior team was successful, and Stewart – who has been with the school for more than 22 years – is hoping both teams can go all the way this season.
“I am very pleased with the start by both teams, and I am very confident that we can go all the way in the competition,” said a confident Stewart.
After dominating the preliminary round so far, Stewart knows the real challenge lies ahead in the second round.
“Based on the teams in our zone, I am not surprised by our dominance so far, but we will be ready when we move to the next round,” said Stewart, noting that he has retained most of his players from last year’s squad.
Stewart identified Gaynstead High, José Martí High, St Catherine High, and Wolmer’s Girls as major threats going forward, and credited early season competition for his team’s improvement.
“Competing earlier in the Netball Jamaica League really helped the players’ development, as the experience was very good for them,” he added.
