NEEDING JUST a point to advance to the next round of the ISSA Manning Cup football competition, Campion College secured their passage with a 1-0 win over Jose Marti Technical High School yesterday in Zone C action.
The all-important goal came in the 50th minute when Djaz Less towered over his markers to head home from close range.
Campion entered the fixture six points ahead of their opponents with two games left in the first round.
The win sees them extend their lead to an unassailable 22 points and taking the second automatic qualifying spot in the zone behind leaders Kingston College (KC), who sit on an undefeated 25 points after the 14-0 thrashing of Meadowbrook yesterday.
Jose Marti, on the other hand, are out of contention with their tally of 13.
Campion took awhile to get into the game but got their first real chance at the half-hour mark. Alexio Ramsey broke through on goal but his tame effort was easily parried by the goalkeeper.
Campion’s head coach Newton Sterling said he was happy with his team’s performance despite their slow start.
The win also means they will enter their final fixture of the first round against KC without pressure.
“I must say congratulations to the boys and going forward from here, I can say the work has just begun,” he said.
“We dug deep today and we got the win. It wasn’t the best because we started off a bit shaky in the first half but as you can see, they fought hard for the goal and I’m happy with them so far.”
Jose Marti would try to get back into the game but were forced to resort to speculative efforts from distance which caused little challenge to the Campionites.
Their best chance came in the 60th minute when Andrew Anderson sent a thundering strike on target from a free kick, forcing a brilliant save from Campion’s goalkeeper Alex James.
Jose Marti head coach Patrick Lewis said he knew it was going to be an uphill task for his team as they had to contend with injuries to their starting players.
With their season on the line, he was left disappointed with the way the game played out.
“Leading up to this game, we knew that had to get a win but based on our injuries, we knew it would be hard and could go either way. It was basically not a winning situation and we just have to accept what happened.”
Jose Marti will close out their campaign with their final fixture against Cumberland.
Tivoli are also through after their 3-0 win over St Mary’s College yesterday, in combination with St Jago’s 1-1 draw with Wolmer’s left them with an unassailable 24 points. St Jago are third on 16 points with a game to go, while Wolmer’s lead the group with 25.
