Another name now emerging in discussions surrounding the upcoming municipal elections, as reports continue to circulate that Dr. Candice Pitts may be preparing to enter the race for mayor of Belize City ahead of the March 2027 polls. Dr. Pitts currently serves as City Manager at the Belize City Council, a post she assumed roughly seven months ago following the end of her tenure as Belize’s Ambassador to Taiwan in July of last year. However, if she officially enters the mayoral race, she would be required to resign from her administrative position at City Hall in order to pursue a political campaign. Prior to her diplomatic appointment, Dr. Pitts served as a Belize City councillor and had also attempted to transition into national electoral politics. While that effort was unsuccessful, she later went on to serve in the diplomatic corps. Her name surfacing as a possible mayoral candidate comes as political speculation intensifies ahead of the next municipal elections, with both major political parties expected to begin internal consultations and candidate positioning in the coming months. In an interview yesterday, PUP’s Kareem Musa says he would suggest that all aspirants go to a convention.

Kareem Musa: “I’ve heard two names so far and two of them are young dynamic vibrant leaders in Belize City. Eliude Miller who is the deputy mayor as well as Allan Pollard. At the end of the day the delegates will decide. Who I’m going to vote for I’m not going to disclose that to you but I think our Caribbean Shores delegates will decide based on their performance as counselors which one of those individuals and maybe even more. We don’t know who else might enter the race but like I said any of those two candidates would be excellent mayoral candidates for the People’s United Party. I always favour conventions. I think that is a sign of a true democracy and our party is a democratic party and so I expect that it would go to a convention.”
Our newsroom reached out to Dr. Pitts for comment on the reports, but up to news time she had not responded.
