Car Dealer Fined $2,500 for Vehicle Scam in Belize City

A car dealer who promised a vehicle but never delivered has been convicted of obtaining property by deception and slapped with a $2,500 fine. Today, 31-year-old Jordan Gerald Morey of Fabers Road Extension, Belize City, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black. He was charged with dishonestly obtaining $6,700 from 23-year-old Natesha Flores between September and December 2024, under the false pretense that he would import a Mazda Tribute vehicle from the United States on her behalf. In court, Morey requested a sentencing indication, explaining that his mother had died the night before while he was in custody and that his 16-year-old sister was left alone with no one to care for her. He also stated that he had no one to bail him out. Upon learning that the offense would not carry an immediate custodial sentence, he quickly entered a guilty plea. Magistrate Black considered Morey’s early plea and his personal circumstances but pointed to the aggravating factor that Morey had a previous conviction for the same offense, along with four other similar charges that had been struck out. The magistrate remarked that Morey’s behavior suggested a troubling pattern of deception. As a result, Morey was fined $2,500, plus a $5 cost of court. He was given until August 29, 2025, to pay or face one year of imprisonment by default.
