A traffic accident involving a cargo truck was reported last night just after 6 o’ clock, along the Philip Goldson Highway, at a time when vehicular traffic in the area had increased following activities at the Corozal Free Zone. The incident involved a truck and trailer belonging to Vegas Trucking Company, which reportedly lost control and crashed into nearby bushes. No other vehicles or persons were involved, and the driver is said to have fled the scene. In a statement issued by the truck’s owner, Hezron Vega, the driver is one Mauricio ‘Garsa’ Calderon, a temporary employee. Vega stated that Calderon had done offloading earlier in the day but remained in the Free Zone, where he was reportedly consuming alcohol. The owner further stated that the driver was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the crash and immediately fled the scene, leaving the truck, trailer, and a flipped container in nearby bushes. Vega stated that the matter has been reported to police and stressed that the driver’s actions do not reflect the company’s standards. Up to news time, police have not issued an official statement, and the driver’s whereabouts remain unknown. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
