FORMER JAMAICA Olympic Association (JOA) Vice-President Don Anderson was recognised and honoured by the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) at its 23rd General Assembly, held in Guyana last week.

Anderson was honoured for his outstanding contribution to that body while serving for more than 12 years, until 2015, as a board member and director. He was one of the original members of the CANOC board. Also honoured were three other Olympic executives, Veda Bruno Victor (Grenada), Steve Stoute (Barbados), and Catherine Forde (Trinidad).

CANOC, which was set up in 2003 as a body to support Olympic organisations in primarily English-speaking countries in the region, has since been expanded to include a number of non-traditional countries, such as Guadeloupe, Martinique, Curacao and Haiti, and is acknowledged for putting on the first multidisciplinary regional Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe in 2022.

Anderson served as vice-president of the JOA for 32 years until 2013, during which time he attended seven consecutive Summer Olympic Games, five of these, from Atlanta in 1996 to London in 2012, as head of the Jamaica delegation to these Games.

He also served until 2015 as a director of the Central American and Caribbean body, now Centro Caribe Sports, and on the board of Caribbean Broadcasting Inc, which brought the television broadcast of the Rio Olympics Games of 2016 to the region.

In 2007, he was conferred the Order of Distinction (Commander Class) for excellence in sports management, and in 2024, an Honorary Doctor of Laws by The University of the West Indies for market research, entrepreneurship and sports management.
