Cavalier ended Harbour View’s four-match unbeaten run in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) under Vassell Reynolds, beating the Stars of the East 1-0 at the Harbour View Mini Stadium on Christopher Ainsworth’s second-half strike yesterday.
Cavalier stayed fifth in the table with 22 points, the same as Mount Pleasant, who defeated Montego Bay United 1-0.
It was Cavalier’s second consecutive win, and assistant coach Colin Wilson said they should have put the game away from the first half.
“We should have won it from the first half, because we had numerous chances,” he said. “The plan was to attack and pressure them, and we did just that. We got the goal in the second half. But we should have killed it off from the first half.”
The home team started on the front foot, looking to push their opponents back, and had a couple of good attacking moves, which they failed to make the most of.
Cavalier started coming into their own after the 15th minute mark, and Denzil Makenzie had two great chances to put the defending champions in front.
First, he headed wide from six yards in the 22nd minute, then in the 25th minute he placed a low shot inches from the far post.
Seven minutes later, Jerome McCleary, Dwayne Allen and McKenzie all had their efforts blocked inside the six yards, after Tyrone Harrison lost possession inside the area.
Harbour View started the second half how they started the first, and Rohan Brown tested goalkeeper Demelcio Fer with a vicious volley.
McCleary almost put Cavalier in front against the run of play, but goalkeeper Garwin Davis denied him at the doorstep after making the initial save. However, Cavalier took the lead after 67 minutes when Ainsworth wriggled free from three defenders on top of the box and fired a low shot past Davis.
Moments later McCleary rattled the bar, as Cavalier continued to use the counter-attack to good effect, and it took a spectacular save from Davis to deny Darly Massicot a second goal for the winners.
Harbour View’s best attempt came in the 82nd minute from a Trevonne Reid free kick, but Fer was equal to the task.
“We were always in the game,” said Harbour View coach Reynolds. “Overall, we did enough to get a point. This (loss) would have disrupted our objective, as we wanted to remain unbeaten for the rest of the year.
“But we are making some progress. A point, or three, would have capped off this year. So this loss is a setback. It shows we have a lot more work to do,” he added
Harbour View dropped to ninth on 14 points.
