REGIONAL FOOTBALL fans will be treated to high-quality football throughout the group stages of the Concacaf Caribbean Cup as Cavalier, the defending champions, and Cibao FC, last year’s beaten finalists, have been drawn together in Group B.
In the group stage draw held yesterday, Cavalier and Cibao of the Dominican Republic will renew their rivalry as they are fated to meet once again in the group stages.
The last time the two teams met, Cavalier edged Cibao to the Caribbean Cup title on away goals after a 2-2 draw on aggregate across both legs.
The two will also be joined in Group B by Defence Force, Trinidad and Tobago Premier Football League (TTPFL) champions, Haitian champions Juventus des Cayes, and the runners-up of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield.
For Cavalier, it will be another chance to defend one of their titles, having already successfully defended their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) crown last month.
Over in Zone B, JPL runners-up Mount Pleasant Football Academy will clash against several of the regional top names.
The boys from St Ann will be joined by 2023 Caribbean Cup champions SV Robinhood of Suriname, the Dominican Republic’s runners-up O&M, the TTPFL runners-up Central FC, and the Club Shield champions.
Mount Pleasant will be looking to better their performance in the Caribbean Cup from last year, where they had crashed out in the group stages, finishing fourth with just one win in four games.
This will also mark Mount Pleasant’s second-ever appearance in the regional competition.
Jamaica could field yet another team in the Caribbean Cup as Arnett Gardens could qualify for the competition based on their performance in the Club Shield.
Arnett, who finished third in the recently concluded JPL, will contest the competition and look to defend their badge as champions.
Should the Junglists make it to the final, they will earn their spot in the Caribbean Cup, and their final placement will determine in which group they are drawn.
Though a start date for the Club Shield is yet to be announced, the Caribbean Cup will kick off group-stage action on August 19.
The semi-finals of the competition are scheduled to be played in October, with the third-place playoff and final set to be played in November and December.
