A Caye Caulker resident is dead following a violent altercation on the island over the weekend. Police say the incident occurred shortly after 8:30 on Saturday night on the North Side of Caye Caulker. Officers were called to the scene following reports of an altercation involving forty-five-year-old Oscar Flota. Upon arrival, Flota was found with injuries and was transported to the local clinic for medical attention. However, despite efforts to assist him, he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The incident has since triggered an investigation, as police work to establish what led up to the altercation and the circumstances surrounding his death. Earlier today, ASP Stacy Smith provided a brief update on the matter.

Stacy Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Police: “What has been learned thus far in the course of this investigation is that Mr. Flota was in a group of several male persons socializing when an argument and a physical confrontation ensued during which time Mr. Flota was struck to the head with a shovel. He was transported for medical however he subsequently passed. Yes I believe they were socializing, drinking. Other persons who were there present at the time were similarly detained. I believe all these persons were familiar with each other, they work together so it was some drinking and socialization gone wrong and as I stated we know who we are looking for and we’re of the view that he will be apprehended shorty. “
Police say investigations remain ongoing, and the matter has been classified as a death investigation.
