On Saturday, the residents of Caye Caulker gathered in support of the HOPE NOT DOPE! Rally to REGISTER A no vote for tomorrow’s referendum on La Isla Carinosa. LJay Wade was in Caye Caulker for the rally.
LJ Wade, Love Reporter: On Saturday, the residents of Caye Caulker marched through the streets of their village, declaring that come October 8th, they will be voting No in the upcoming marijuana referendum. The parade saw participation from around 200 residents of the island, all dressed in white, with placards expressing why they don’t want cannabis to be legalized in their village. According to the residents, the only correct vote is a No Vote come referendum day.
Citizen: “I decided to join the rally to show my full support and say no to marijuana, that we want to keep our island healthy as it is and that we have a better future for our children as we have here so No to marijuana. We want our community to always be free of drugs for a better future for our children. If we had a healthy environment while we were growing, we cannot be mean and not offer our children a better environment. Vote no October 8th.“
Citizen: “I believe in God that hopefully we’re going to conquer. So we’re going to say no. I hope all the people go out and vote no. OK? “
Citizen: “We decided to join the march because we want to vote no and yeah, we just want to localize our No in this campaign.”
Citizen: “Well, I decided to join today just because I feel like this is my part already to show that I’m not really supporting it to go legal. The reason why I say no is because, why they are only doing Caye Caulker, because what about San Pedro, why aren’t they doing it countrywide? Right? And at the end of the day we have the little ones, where they grow up too. We don’t want them to get caught up in the mix. At the end of the day, we won’t benefit from it, the government is the one that will benefit from this.“
Citizen: “Well I say no because at the end of the day we have the young people and you want to show the right example. Leave it just the way it is. Everybody…no, no, no.”
LJ Wade, Love Reporter: Following the march through the streets of Caye Caulker, a rally was held at Central Park where guest speakers and pastors prayed over the island. On October 8th, the residents of Keekawker will have to answer one question…Should the government of Belize pass legislation to create a regulated and taxable legal cannabis industry on the island? That question will be answered in the coming days. Reporting for Love News, LJ Wade.
Tomorrow’s poll begins at 7:00 am and closes at 6:00 pm.
