CENTRAL JAMAICA schoolboy football kingpins Garvey Maceo and Glenmuir High School, while hoping for better weather, are smiling quietly at a much-needed break for their ISSA daCosta Cup teams.

Lester Hibbert, coach of Garvey Maceo, and Andre Peart of Glenmuir High were comfortable with the pause, but emphasised that the safety of the players and their families was the top priority.

“The thing is, we do not know how long it will be for. However, the most important thing right now is the safety of the boys and their families,” said Peart.

Hibbert shared similar sentiments.

“For me, the break is okay. This is out of our control. It’s a natural disaster, so we just have to go through the process. I’m just hoping that all the players and their families stay safe, as we do not know what the outcome will be after this,” he said.

Both teams are in the tough Zone 3, regarded as the ‘Group of Death’, which also includes another Clarendon powerhouse, Clarendon College, and western team Maggotty High. Only two teams advance to the quarter-finals.

Glenmuir drew first blood with a 1–0 home win over Maggotty and now sit atop the standings with maximum three points. Meanwhile, defending champions Garvey Maceo and Clarendon College, 2023 winners of the competition, are tied on one point each after playing to a goalless draw in their opening match at the Wembley Excellence Centre.

A dogfight is expected in the remaining matches, with all four teams still in with a chance to advance.

Glenmuir will play away to Clarendon College and host Garvey Maceo in their final two matches.

The defending champions, will be facing Glenmuir for the third time this season with the teams winning a game apiece. The deciding third game could also decide who makes it through to the quarter-final.

The defending champions will be at home to Maggotty, while Clarendon College will travel to face the same opponents.
