CEO Caucus Launches Youth Tree Replanting Program to Support Million-Tree Goal

Today saw the launch of a special environmental project spearheaded by Government’s Chief Executive Officers, aimed at engaging young Belizeans in conservation efforts while advancing a national goal of planting one million trees by 2035.  The initiative, known as the CEO Caucus Replanting Program, was launched at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic School in Roaring Creek under the broader Greening Belize Initiative. Led by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management and the Forest Department, the program forms part of a nationwide effort to increase forest cover and promote environmental responsibility.  The outreach campaign combines tree planting activities, waste separation exercises and environmental education, with schools across the country set to participate through monthly visits.  Speaking at today’s launch, Chief Executive Officer Milagro Matus explained that the initiative goes beyond simply planting trees. She said the program is designed to inspire and empower young people to become environmental stewards and future custodians of Belize’s natural resources.

The Greening Belize Initiative is being carried out in partnership with non-governmental organizations, private sector entities, municipalities and civil society groups, all working toward the ambitious target of planting at least one million trees nationwide by 2035.

Matus noted that the Ministry is currently assessing the number of trees already planted across the country to determine Belize’s progress toward that goal. She also encouraged Belizeans to do their part in protecting the environment and maintaining the country’s reputation as a green nation.

Today’s event also included the presentation of a Greening Belize Initiative certificate, an anti-littering campaign presentation, remarks from Cabinet Secretary Stuart Leslie, and a ceremonial tree planting exercise involving students, educators and government officials.
