CHARLIE SMITH High School and St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) were two of yesterday’s biggest winners in the ISSA Manning Cup, both registering important wins as the first round nears a climactic crescendo.
Charlie Smith continued their charge for the remaining automatic qualifying spot in Zone B after breezing past Tarrant High 4-0 in their penultimate game.
The win put Charlie Smith on 18 points from nine games, to sit second in the zone behind defending Manning Cup champions Mona, on 22.
Charlie Smith are also three points clear of Jonathan Grant, who sit third with 15 but have played one less game.
The two teams are locked in a close race for a spot in the next round, with Charlie Smith now having the slight advantage.
Their win puts pressure on Jonathan Grant to get a result against Waterford High who they will face today in an away fixture.
STATHS 18-1 win
In Zone D, STATHS have regained their top spot after a mammoth 18-1 drubbing of Kingston Technical High School, leapfrogging Calabar in the standings.
STATHS showed their prowess in front of goal, racing to a 9-1 by half-time.
The boys from Bumper Hall would go on to add another nine goals to their tally in the second half, to pull level on points with Calabar, but overtake the Lions as zone leaders with a superior goal difference.
Both teams now sit on 22 points, well clear of third-placed Haile Selassie on 12.
The match was STATHS’ most impressive showing yet, as they had only scored 13 goals altogether before yesterday.
In stark contrast, Kingston Technical have now slumped to their ninth-straight loss this season and are rooted at the foot of Zone D without a point, conceding 63 goals.
Over on Red Hills Road, Calabar dismissed Vauxhall in a 4-1 mismatch to extend their win streak to seven games.
The Lions were just too much to handle for Vauxhall, who sit fourth in the zone on 10 points behind Haile Selassie.
