Christian Community Urged to Speak Up on Critical Political Issues

Pollster Don Anderson says the Christian community appears to be silent on critical issues emerging on the campaign trail ahead of the next general election.

Mr. Anderson made the observation while participating in a virtual political forum hosted on Sunday by the Association of Christian Communicators and Media.

The forum was put on to examine voting trends and impact within the Christian community.

The Association notes that based on available census data, at least 69 percent of the Jamaican population identifies as Christians.

But it adds that with high voter apathy in the country, it’s clear that the church community is often a silent constituency.

For her part, retired media professional, Kay Osborne, says the leadership within the Christian community has failed to forcefully articulate and advocate for the issues that matter to their congregants.

She says this has diminished the church’s potential to drive meaningful change in the political environment.
