Former Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Senator Christopher Coye, is once again taking on duties for the Briceño administration, this time in a more targeted role. According to a notice published in the Government Gazette, Coye has been appointed Belize’s Special Envoy for Finance and Investments. Coye resigned from his post as Minister of State at the end of September last year, returning to private legal practice just six months after being sworn in for the government’s new term. Despite stepping away from the ministerial portfolio, he has remained a Government Senator. The latest appointment places Coye back into government service, authorizing him to act on behalf of the Government of Belize in matters relating to finance and investment. The Gazette notice further calls on all relevant public sector agencies to facilitate his work, which will operate under the purview of the Ministry of Finance. Coye is no stranger to the financial policy space. He first entered the Briceño administration in November 2020, when he was appointed Government Senator and Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment following the PUP’s electoral victory. He served in that dual capacity throughout the administration’s first term and was re-sworn in March of last year when the government renewed its mandate. However, in late September he stepped down from the ministerial role and returned to his private law practice, while maintaining his seat in the Senate. Government officials say the Special Envoy appointment is intended to strengthen Belize’s engagement on financial and investment matters, with Senator Coye now supporting those efforts in a focused advisory and representational capacity.
