Christy Guzman Granted Bail in Manslaughter Case After 30 Days in Custody

After 30 days in custody, Christy Guzman was yesterday released on a nine-thousand-dollar bail, granted by the High Court.  Justice Nigel Pilgrim heard the bail application presented by Guzman’s attorney Hurl Hamilton, and rendered his decision with several conditions.  The 21-year-old must report twice weekly to the Belmopan Police Station until her trial is concluded. She is also required to appear before the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court on November 7, and on any further dates as directed.

Additional restrictions include surrendering her travel documents to the High Court, remaining in Belize unless granted judicial approval to leave, and refraining from any interference with Crown witnesses. She must also avoid arrest for any further offences while out on bail.  Guzman was charged with manslaughter following the shooting death of 28-year-old, Wilson Hernandez on Sunday, August 31.  Allegations are that Guzman fired the fatal shot during a domestic dispute between Hernandez and 37-year-old, Dalia Vellos.  Since the incident, several have clamored for Vellos to face criminal charges as video surveillance shows her handing her licensed firearm to Guzman.  To date, however, no such charges have been filed.
