Chung FID Appointment Creates Political Flash Point

The battle over Dennis Chung’s appointment as chief technical director of the Financial Investigations Division, FID, is set to be the first flash point of the campaign leading up to the next general election due by the end of September.

The governing Jamaica Labour Party has directed its base to mount counter protests to a public demonstration planned by the opposition People’s National Party, PNP, at National Heroes Circle at 8:30 Monday morning.

It remains unclear if Labourites will trek to Heroes Circle to face down comrades who’ve been poised to stage a public protest since last Thursday, when their General Secretary, Dr. Dayton Campbell gave the government a 72 hour ultimatum to rescind the Chung appointment.

In a message sent on the weekend, Opposition Leader Mark Golding said the protest will be staged under the theme “Rescue Jamaica From Corruption”.

Golding is calling on Jamaicans to support the PNP in their resistance against what he calls the manipulation of government institutions.
