Church Senator Reverend Louis Wade Junior is pushing back against calls to decriminalize abortion in Belize. His response follows yesterday’s interview with Belize Family Life Association Executive Director Joan Burke, who advocated for dialogue with the government on changing the law. Wade rejects that position and says he will oppose any move to legalize abortion. He argues that unborn children deserve protection and that the proposed changes should not be supported.

Luis Wade, Churches Senator: “The church remains very steadfast on all moral issues as it relates to Belize. And it’s not just pastors. It is really all God-faring, Bible-believing people within this country that vote and that have a say. So we as Belizeans will never be, will never shut up when things are heading down the wrong in the wrong direction. I think we should abort BFLA. I think that BFLA is too loose on our tax dollars and they should be protecting families and not putting unborn babies in danger. Essentially Belize already has laws that the health professionals can use in their determination. This is the field of science and medicine. It is not to be used by people as a get rich quick scheme. It is not to be used by parents who can’t work and take care of their children and it is not for people to use as some kind of contraception or contraceptive solution. There are many things in this life that criminalizing it won’t stop. Criminalizing doesn’t stop murder and it appears that some people want to murder even unborn babies. So essentially morality demands that we set up laws that protect the most vulnerable. And there is no person more vulnerable than the baby in the womb. A fetus in Latin means baby. So whenever a person uses the word fetus, they are simply saying baby in a different language. There is no other place that a human being can develop than in the womb of a woman. And so the woman is blessed and I’m glad that most people understand, most women especially understand their role. But one of the things that we see in abortion is that the gender that is aborted the most is girls by the millions. And so I want to know those people who are saying that what is their response to that, that even United Nations has called the fact that more abortions of girls take place than boys. It is called violence against women and I think that both men and women must protect women from violence even if that violence is coming from a woman.”
Wade also took to social media to condemn the campaign and call for the BFLA to be defunded. His posts linked his opposition to concerns about Belize’s population and declining fertility. He also made claims about ethnic population changes and the number of girls affected by abortion, although without supporting evidence. Speaking on the issue, Wade said he believes other citizens will join him in lobbying against any proposed changes to the abortion laws.
Luis Wade, Churches Senator: “The statistic that we need to pay attention to is the one which talks about the Belizean population, the fact that it is leveling off and also that our fertility rate has dropped below 2.1. And 2.1 is the rate that actually sustains your population. Belize is already an underpopulated nation and now we are at 1.9 so that our natural population is about to shrink if we do not get our fertility rate up above 2.1 like Guatemala, like Honduras and some of the other countries. And so this is the wrong time to be talking about killing Belizean babies. We should be asking ourselves, how can we have more babies and how can we have them lead a healthy, productive life? A baby inside a woman is not her body. is in her body and a baby can only be created when a male and a female procreate. So the woman has been given this wonderful duty to be the safe space for that baby to develop for nine months. You know, even if you own a house and you rent it out to somebody, you can’t just kill them and do what you want with them. I’m glad that there are many wise women in this country who recognize that both men and women must protect the unborn child. So I think this is just a stupid argument to try to eliminate 50% of the population from a conversation which deals with trying to kill unborn babies. I think we should try to defund BFLA. I think that’s the next step because they’re in my opinion outside of family life protection.”
Love News understands that the conversation has already begun with government officials./
