Churches call for a filtered and cleaner Carnival Road March

The Belize Council of Churches is calling on Carnival organizers and participants to place greater emphasis on modesty and public decency during the annual festivities.  In a media statement, the Council expressed concern over what it described as increasingly immodest attire and conduct by some Carnival participants in recent years. The religious body acknowledged that Carnival remains an important part of Belizean culture, celebrating national identity, creativity and community. It stressed that it does not seek to diminish the tradition or the artistry, music and craftsmanship involved.  However, the Council maintains that vibrant public celebration and standards of decency can exist together. It is asking organizers to establish and enforce clear costume guidelines, particularly for events involving minors.  Parents and guardians are also being encouraged to exercise discretion regarding their children’s participation in, and exposure to, certain aspects of the celebrations.  The Council further urged participants to consider the example being set for children and the image of Belize being presented through the festivities. It described modest dress as an expression of self-respect and respect for others sharing public spaces.  The Belize Council of Churches says it remains willing to engage with the Government, cultural institutions and Carnival organizers to find a balance that preserves the spirit of Carnival while upholding the moral standards represented by the churches.  It says the intention is to encourage dialogue rather than division.
