MOUNT PLEASANT took a vital 1-0 lead over Universidad O&M in the first leg of their Concacaf Caribbean Cup final, at the Estadio Cibao FC in Santiago de los Caballeros, in the Dominican Republic yesterday.

Kimoni Bailey scored the all-important goal eight minutes into the first half to take his team one step closer to the coveted regional championship.

Mount Pleasant started the better of the teams and got the go-ahead goal through Bailey, who steered home Gadail Irving’s corner from 12 yards, with his trusted left boot.

Mount Pleasant continued to have the better of play but failed to make use of their superiority.

Universidad O&M came into their own after the 20th-minute mark and gave the Jamaicans a few scares but produced nothing the Mount Pleasant defence could not handle.

Theodore Whitmore’s team regained control towards the latter stages but had no clear-cut chance to add to their advantage.

The visiting Jamaicans continued to control the match after the interval and limited their opponents’ opportunities on goal.

The St Ann-based team also had a couple of good chances.

Raheem Edwards thought that he had added a second to his team’s lead, but his goal was called back for a hand ball.

Although they did not create much afterwards, O&M had another good effort on goal, but that was not enough to create much difficulty for the visitors to see out the game.

The result means that O&M will now have to find a way to win when they visit the National Stadium when the second leg kicks off at the National Stadium on Tuesday.
