A Belize Coast Guard member is in police custody tonight after his police officer girlfriend was discovered with multiple stab wounds inside their Belize City residence. The incident unfolded early Monday morning and has left investigators piecing together what happened, as the victim has only regained consciousness today and is still unable to give a formal statement. During today’s police press briefing, Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith confirmed that officers were called to a home on Gibnut Street around 5:00 a.m. this morning, following reports of an active domestic dispute. Upon arrival, police encountered the male resident, identified as a member of the Belize Coast Guard, who led them to a room inside the house. There, officers found his common-law wife, a serving police officer, suffering from multiple stab wounds and in a semi-conscious state. The woman was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where she remains sedated as part of her treatment but is listed in stable condition. According to ASP Smith, the victim only regained consciousness sometime today, and investigators are awaiting her formal statement to confirm critical details of the attack. Police report that there had been previous domestic disputes between the couple. The Coast Guard officer was immediately detained, and investigators are now working to determine what led to the violent altercation. Authorities say charges will be considered once the victim is able to provide her account and the investigation is completed.
