Colquhoun Becomes First Jamaican to Compete at World Games

Matthew Colquhoun, a determined and disciplined martial artist, is about to become the first Jamaican ever to compete in Combat Sambo at the World Games — and not just in any category, but the fiercely competitive 88kg division.

While most Jamaican youth dream of Olympic sprints or football stardom, Matthew found his passion on the mats of a humble community gym.

Colquhoun says just qualifying for the World Games is a major achievement.

In 2024, Colquhoun competed in a Pan-American Sambo tournament in Colombia and shocked the crowd by defeating the number-two seed with a last-minute armbar.

That victory earned him international attention and a wildcard invitation to the 2025 World Games.

It was a historic moment as for the first time ever, the Jamaican flag would be raised in the world of Combat Sambo.

Colquhoun hopes to repeat that experience.
