Commentators Predict Minimal Fallout for Gov’t from SOE Ruling

Public commentator Germaine Barrett does not believe the governing Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, will suffer a fall out from last week’s ruling by the Supreme Court regarding the government’s use of rolling states of emergency as a crime fighting tool.

It was ruled that the government’s action was unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, political analyst Lloyd B Smith also does not believe the ruling will affect the JLP’s chances at the polls.

Meanwhile, noted constitutional lawyer, Dr. Lloyd Barnett, believes that despite the government’s plan to appeal the ruling, those who had been detained under the states of emergency can still file an action against the state.

Dr. Barnett does not believe the government will get a stay of the judgement of the Supreme Court pending the outcome of its appeal.
