TWO SATURDAYS past, the Excelsior Community College (ECC) embarked on a novel idea, using its fundraising efforts for the furtherance of the education of its own students.
The ECC’s first-ever 5K Run/Walk, part of its 50th anniversary celebrations under the theme “Celebrating 50 Years – Honouring a Legacy of Achievements”, included students, staff, alumni, and supporters from across the Corporate Area.
The ‘Fit For 50’ 5K event, dubbed a “Legacy Project,” was aimed at raising funds to provide financial assistance to students in need. It also served to strengthen community bonds and promote healthy lifestyles.
Philmore McCarthy, principal of the Excelsior Community College, expressed gratitude for the turnout and support.
“This event was more than just a race – it was a celebration of our journey over the last 50 years and a reaffirmation of our commitment to our students’ success,” he said.
Participants gathered at the ECC main campus from as early as 6:30 a.m. for warm-up exercises before hitting the road just after 7 a.m., for a lively and well-organised race through the streets of Kingston.
The day featured a designated fun zone and several water stations along the route to keep participants hydrated and energised.
Attendees were also treated to refreshments, entertainment, and giveaways following the race.
“The Excelsior family would like to extend sincere thanks to all sponsors, including Derrimon Trading Co Ltd, VM Group, Mother’s, TIP Friendly Society, Caribbean Marketing Place 2030, Nationwide Radio, JTA Co-operative Credit Union, and Medical Disposables & Supplies Ltd, for making the event possible,” added McCarthy.
