A team from the Concerned Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago (CMTT) departed for Jamaica yesterday to begin on-the-ground relief operations following the devastating Hurricane Melissa that recently struck the island.
The delegation, which includes two representatives from CMTT, will assess the situation in affected communities, purchase relief items from local wholesalers in Kingston, and carry out the first distribution of aid tomorrow.
The team will also meet with Jamaican government agencies and Islamic Relief Worldwide partners to organise logistics, secure warehouse space, and obtain the necessary approvals for relief shipments from Trinidad.
CMTT’s public relations officer, Imtiaz Mohammed, said the organisation was deeply moved by the suffering of the Jamaican people and felt compelled to act swiftly.
“When a disaster occurs, we at CMTT see it as our duty to help the victims so they can regain comfort and security in their lives,” Mohammed stated.
The organisation officially launched its Jamaica Disaster and Emergency Relief Project earlier this week, with the goal of delivering large-scale aid shipments to Jamaica within the next two to four weeks.
CMTT has already been in contact with its local partners in Jamaica to coordinate logistics, government clearances, and tax-free entry of humanitarian supplies. Relief items will be shipped in containers through a joint effort with Islamic Relief UK, the US, and Canada.
Mohammed called on the public to contribute urgently, noting that CMTT has shared a list of priority items on its social media pages.
“We are asking donors to act now and move swiftly in bringing their financial donations and supplies to us so we can deliver the aid quickly to the affected people in Jamaica,” he said.
CMTT assured that it will continue to update the public as relief efforts progress and as more information becomes available from the ground in Jamaica.
For more details or to contribute, donors are encouraged to contact CMTT through its official communication channels and social media platforms.
