CoP assures firearm files safe after sprinkler rupture

Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro has reassured the public that more than 55,000 firearm files remain secure, following a rupture in the fire suppression system at the Police Administration Building, Port of Spain, on Monday.

In an audio statement, Guevarro said, “Let me be absolutely clear because I have seen and heard the comments and conspiracy theories on social media. The 55,000 plus firearm files are safe. The only firearm files affected were those brought to my office for weekly adjudication. So there’s no need for panic.”

He explained that the incident was triggered by ongoing electrical issues at the building, describing it as “not a modern facility… we are operating with just one elevator. The central air conditioning system does not function in most areas.”

Guevarro said authorities are reviewing damaged HR and administrative files to determine what can be salvaged, and applicants will be contacted for reconciliation. He added that the police service is accelerating digitisation to safeguard operations against future infrastructure failures.
