POLICE Commissioner Allister Guevarro paid his first official visit to Tobago on October 10.

Parliament approved Guevarro’s nomination on June 13, with unanimous support from both government and opposition MPs. He was appointed police commissioner on June 18.

A release from the Office of the Chief Secretary said Guevarro met with Chief Secretary Farley Augustine to discuss ongoing security measures on the island.

It said Augustine discussed the proactive approach being taken by his administration to strengthen law enforcement, including the establishment of temporary police units in key hotspots and the utilisation of enhanced intelligence support to inform operations.

He also noted that the theft of boats and boat engines remains a major concern for the island’s coastal communities.

The issue of a coastal and riverine branch presence in Tobago to further secure the island’s marine space, including areas like the Buccoo Reef Marine Park also was raised, the release said.

The THA, it said, reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the TTPS to remain proactive and responsive to emerging security challenges.

The release said the Commissioner commended the encouraging trends in current crime statistics on the island but emphasised the need for continued vigilance and strategic collaboration.

THA Chief Administrator Denese Toby-Quashie; Oswain Subero, ACP, Tobago Division; Earl Elie, Snr Supt; and other senior officers also were present at the meeting.
