A senior police officer confirmed on July 28 that the injured officer involved in a violent domestic incident in El Dorado over the weekend has been discharged from the hospital and is now resting with relatives.

Cpl Persad was attacked and stabbed several times by a suspect, Mustapha Rawlins, 42.

Rawlins was fatally shot during the ordeal on July 26, when officers from the North Central Division Task Force (West) responded to a domestic violence report around 1.30 pm.

Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro visited the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope shortly after the incident to check on the officer's condition.

Guevarro commended the medical staff for their swift and professional response.

"This incident underscores the relentless threats faced by my officers as they risk their lives on a daily basis to protect concerned citizens in TT," he said via a voice note.

He said the police stand united in support of Persad and his family during this critical time.

The top cop called on the nation to rally around this "brave officer," who sacrificed, exemplifying the courage and commitment embedded in the hearts of all law enforcement officers.

Guevarro added, "Our prayers remain with him and his loved ones at this time."

When the officers had responded to the report, they heard screams from inside the house and ordered Rawlins to open the door.

He refused and barricaded himself inside with two elderly female relatives.

Persad and his team forced their way into the house, where Rawlins attacked and stabbed him with a knife.

Police shot Rawlins, and both men were taken to the hospital. However, Rawlins was declared dead on arrival.

Neighbours said Rawlins had a long history of erratic and violent behaviour.
