The police service is committed to keeping all Government ministers safe, in particular Defence Minister Wayne Sturge, Deputy Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin says.

One day after Government ministers said Sturge was alive and well, after allegedly receiving death threats, Benjamin said he could not provide details on the reported threats.

Speaking with Guardian Media after meeting with officials at the Ministry of Education yesterday, Benjamin, who has operational control of the police, said the TTPS was committed to ensuring the safety of all in Government.

“I will tell you that our ministers are very important to us. We are going to ensure that the necessary security measures are put in place to ensure their safety and security. And therefore, everyone, be it ministers, public, we are going to ensure safety and security for all, and Mr Sturge is also on the radar to ensure that his safety and security is our priority.”

On Wednesday, Justice Minister Devesh Maharaj and Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander urged the media to get answers from Sturge himself on when and what threats had been made, the medium used to issue the threats, what security agency he reported it to, and if increased security measures had been put in place for him and his family.

Asked if the Cabinet had met to discuss what had been described as a grave and serious matter, Maharaj declined comment, citing confidentiality and security concerns.

Aside from Sturge, Local Government and Rural Development Minister Khadijah Ameen and Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath were also the targets of alleged death threats.

Only on Tuesday, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said “minor security adjustments have been made on a temporary basis” to protect some of her ministers. – Jensen La Vende
