Corozal Beekeepers Get Training to Improve Hive Health and Honey Production

The Agriculture Department in the Corozal District is strengthening the skills of local beekeepers through a two-day technical training focused on improving hive management, colony health, and honey production. Held on August fourth and fifth, the workshop brought together eighteen participants, including honey producers and agriculture extension officers, who learned about bee biology, feeding techniques, proper hive management, and how to identify and manage pests such as the varroa mite and small hive beetle. The training was conducted in collaboration with National Beekeeping Coordinator Miguel Huertas and the Climate Resilient Agriculture Project, also known as CRESAP. Huertas says the sessions are designed to provide beekeepers with practical knowledge to improve their operations and respond to the challenges affecting bee colonies.

The workshop also included hands-on field exercises at Samuel Lainez’s Apiary in Concepcion Village, where participants carried out hive inspections and installed specialized hive feeders. Agriculture Extension Officer Alexis Blanco says these practical sessions help ensure beekeepers are better prepared to manage their colonies throughout the year.

The Corozal workshop is part of an ongoing series of beekeeping trainings being held across Belize every one to three months.
