A Corozal mother is speaking out tonight after alleging that a frightening encounter involving two young girls and local musician Shane Gilharry unfolded on Friday afternoon in the Corozal area. The allegations surfaced publicly after Rosa Ancona claimed that her daughter and niece were approached while walking, when Gilharry allegedly blocked them with his vehicle and attempted to place a white cloth over one of the girls’ faces. The incident has since sparked widespread concern on social media and prompted a lengthy public statement from the family and management of Gilharry 7 Band. According to Ancona, the two girls immediately returned home visibly shaken and reported what had allegedly happened. She says the family wasted no time in responding to the situation. She did indicate, however, that the Corozal Police were not cooperative on the matter.
Rosangelica Ancona, Mother: “When my girls reached home they came bawling, crying, trembling and all and I’m like “What happened to you guys ?” They said “A guy wanted to take us.” And I’m like “What !?” “Yes mom someone wanted to take us.” And I went with them. I went with them to the park and we were searching. My daughter and my niece told me that when the man approached them the man actually drove right in front of them, he parked right in front of them and when he opened the door and then from there he took a white thing to put it on my niece’s face. So when she said he did that she started screaming. I went to the police station, first a police came and said they will write down all the details first then another police came and did the same details and then another the same thing. The thing is it’s like three police did the same details over and over. And then my daughter was so frustrated and she said mom she told the police, she told the police “Why again are you asking me the same question ?” The police told her “You want to piss ? So you want to piss go and piss.” They told her, and she said “Yes I want to piss.” But she was nervous and I said that was not the way they were supposed to react with her because she is nervous and she is feeling so bad you know ? Then from there I was talking to the police and they said they would send a patrol to go at the park and check if they have cameras. I said okay then sure. We waiting like maybe twenty, twenty five minutes. I said nobody was moving, nobody was moving you know. When I tell you nobody was moving nobody was moving. After the older brother, I think it’s the older brother or I don’t know the one that is in charge right now because he came and gave an apology to the family and then he said you know what they came to apologize and I was really mad, I didn’t want to see anybody because that is not going to remove what my kids felt and still at the moment. And me myself I feel it myself too because my sugar went all teh way to four hundred and change. Today I am using glasses because my vision is not working well because of all of this that is happening and then they came right here and apologized and they told me that if need anything let them know if I need something. And I told them I don’t need anything from them. I don’t know in which kind of way they said it but I don’t need anything from them because nobody will come and buy me or they will come try to tell me they will help me out because this is not just going to go like that because it’s money talking right here.”
In a statement released on Saturday morning, the family of Shane Gilharry said they are “deeply saddened, disturbed, and sorry for everything that has transpired.” The statement alleges that Gilharry has been struggling with emotional and mental health challenges following the death of his mother and claims relatives had previously sought assistance through both police and private medical channels. Ancona also responded to the statement issued by the Gilharry family, saying while she sympathizes with any family facing personal struggles, the safety of children must remain the priority.
Rosangelica Ancona, Mother: “So I told the police if you all won’t do anything I will go and see what will happen because we can’t have these people out here like this. It is true their mental health or whatever but that doesn’t mean that they will be going about catching girls out there. I wasn’t afraid because when it comes to my children I don’t care who it is. So I stepped in, way inside, and I approached him and I told him I came here because I am tired because suppose your brother would have taken those kids we don’t know what would have happened. This is a frustration that up to today I can’t sleep because I don’t know what would have happened to my kids. The brother told me you know miss he has a mental issue. Excuse me yes he could have a mental issue but he’s not supposed to do what he did because if he would have taken or killed or they just disgraced their life because for them to do that it’s so easy right ? So I really feel so bad about what happened and I approached them and told them that this is not going to stay like this and I started to tell the man all kinds of things and I actually put my two kids even though they were trembling because they didn’t want to see the man I told them “Come, and you watch my daughters well and let this be the first and last time you do that.” He’s not crazy because he knows what he is doing. Yes we could understand his mom died, we understand all of that but that doesn’t make him do those things.”
The family further stated that several reports had allegedly been made to the Corozal Police Station regarding concerns over Gilharry’s mental state, while also outlining efforts including medication, treatment in Chetumal, spiritual guidance, and other interventions. The statement additionally confirmed that Gilharry had already stepped away from active participation in the band and that the family intends to pursue legal action aimed at seeking court intervention regarding his condition./
