Corporal Morales Pleads for Leniency in Jessie Escobar Case

Corporal Juan Carlos Morales, one of two public officers convicted of perverting the course of justice in the 2021 shooting death of BDF soldier Jessie Escobar, made an emotional final statement to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today as mitigation hearings continued ahead of sentencingMorales, currently interdicted and receiving $300 every two weeks, pleaded for mercy from the court and forgiveness from Escobar’s family. During lengthy remarks, he also alleged that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had prior knowledge of a witness statement he claims was false and said he provided supporting documents to his attorney accusing a sergeant and a justice of the peace of lying in matters connected to the case. Following the accusations, the DPP requested an adjournment to respond.  Morales outlined personal struggles, including limited education, depression, and financial hardship, saying he had aimed to serve his country and provide for his family. He added that he wished he had died instead of Escobar and described the toll the case has taken on his mental health and family.  Later in the day, defense attorneys urged the court to impose non-custodial sentences or fines, arguing both Morales and co-accused Ramon Alberto Alcoser had already suffered significantly. Prosecutors countered that the offense is serious and carries a potential maximum sentence of five years, emphasizing the importance of deterrence and public confidence in the justice system. Sentencing was adjourned and is scheduled for Friday.
