Councillor for the Junction Division in South East St. Elizabeth, Cetany Holness, is calling on the police to swiftly arrest the perpetrators behind Monday’s fiery protest in Exton.

It’s reported that early Monday morning, PNP supporters mounted roadblocks in the square to protest the installation of Mayor Norman Scott as constituency caretaker.

Councillor Holness says the protest caused significant damage to the main road and disrupted the transit of commuters.

Scott, who is the Mayor of Spanish Town, is poised to represent the PNP at the next General Election, due later this year.

Images obtained by our News Centre showed debris burning in Exton Square.

This included a burnt drum, several pieces of rusted metal, tree branches, a torn-down sign, and stones.

Members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade were seen extinguishing the blaze.

Police personnel were also on the scene.

Councillor Holness has also dismissed comments that the protest was organised by supporters of the JLP.

Meanwhile, Mayor Scott is asserting that no member of the PNP was involved in or supported the protest in Exton.

In a statement on Monday, the Spanish Town Mayor says the disruption affected residents, commuters, and businesses in the area, causing undue stress and delays.

He notes that the PNP remains committed to peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement.

According to Mayor Scott, progress and change can only be achieved through peaceful means that promote unity and understanding within communities.

He says the PNP is dedicated to addressing the genuine concerns of the people of South East St. Elizabeth.
