Court Shows Compassion to Sick Woman Caught Driving Unlicensed Vehicle

A Belize City woman, facing severe health issues, received a compassionate ruling in court today after being caught driving an unlicensed vehicle. Forty-seven-year-old Shirley Adette Arnold, of #88 JR Street, appeared before Magistrate Ludlow Black. She pleaded guilty with an explanation to using an unlicensed silver Mazda Tribute on Central American Boulevard on June 5. Represented by Attorney Norma Rodriguez, Arnold explained she only drove to the hospital for frequent dialysis treatments, stating her difficulty walking due to swelling, kidney issues, and diabetes. Despite a prior conviction for the same offense, Magistrate Black showed leniency, taking Arnold’s medical condition into account. He imposed a fine of $105, including court costs, to be paid by June 30, 2025. The Magistrate also pardoned her from paying a significant previous court debt, accepting her promise to pay $200 by Friday.
