Trinidadian singer and songwriter Coutain has been named Billboard’s Caribbean Up-And-Comer for September 2026, adding another milestone to a breakthrough year for the Sangre Grande-born artist.

Born Denzil Coutain, the Trinidadian musician has drawn attention for a sound that blends soca, reggae, dancehall and R&B with contemporary songwriting. Billboard highlighted his ability to bring fresh energy to Trinidadian classics while maintaining a smooth, soulful vocal style.

Coutain’s profile has grown significantly over the past year, particularly following the release of “Wedding Band” in December 2025. The song reimagines calypsonian Mighty Sparrow’s “Mr. Walker,” combining elements of Trinidad’s musical heritage with a modern soca-influenced production. The track also became a highlight of Coutain’s performances as an opening act on Kes the Band’s Roots, Rock, Soca Tour in Europe during the summer.

His creative partnership with Trinidadian producer Michael “Tano” Montano has also contributed to his recent momentum. The pair collaborated on “Junction” before releasing “Jamtown,” which Billboard reported had generated nearly two million official on-demand streams in the United States, according to Luminate.

The recognition follows a strong awards season for Coutain, who received three nominations at the 2026 Caribbean Music Awards, including Best New Soca Artist. His growing international profile has positioned him among a new generation of Caribbean musicians seeking to take the region’s sounds and musical traditions to wider audiences.

Speaking to Billboard, Coutain said one of his long-term goals is to use his growing platform to support other Caribbean artists and demonstrate the region’s creative potential.

“A long-term goal for me is to reach a place where I could help the next generation and show the world that the Caribbean has so much to offer. We have stars living right here.”

Coutain is now preparing for his forthcoming debut solo album, which he expects to release after Trinidad Carnival 2027. As his international audience continues to grow, the Billboard recognition marks another step in his effort to connect Trinidadian musical heritage with a new generation of listeners around the world.
