“Teachers’ INDECOM”
That’s the term Opposition Spokesperson on Education, Senator Damion Crawford, says is being used to describe the Jamaica Teaching Council, JTC, Bill.
He made the claim at a PNP Policy breakfast on Thursday.
Mahiri Stewart has that story.
According to Senator Damion Crawford, the Jamaica Teaching Council, JTC, Bill is being termed the Teachers’ INDECOM because it’s a widely held belief that the measures outlined in the proposed legislation are aimed at punishing teachers.
When pressed to explain the terminology, Senator Crawford told members of the press in attendance at his Policy Breakfast that the teachers’ criticism of the bill is similar to the police concerns about the Independent Commission of Investigations INDECOM.
The Commission investigates the conduct of the Security Forces and other agents of the State.
Senator Crawford notes that the government is using the JTC Bill to deflect from its responsibility for poor performance being detected in schools.
The JTC Bill was passed in the Senate with 38 amendments in April.
It received bipartisan support.
But according to Senator Crawford, the Opposition had no power to stop the passage of the bill.
