Elections were held at the recently concluded COPACI Congress held in Panama, on February 26.
Thirty-seven of the 42 member federations from the North, Central, South America, and the Caribbean were present to elect a 21-member COPACI Board.
Jamaica was represented by federation president Dr. Wayne Palmer and General Secretary Donna-Kaye Sharpe.
Jose Manuel Pelaez a Cuban National retained his presidency by warding off his contender Argentinian Juan Estaban Curuchet with a margin of 22 votes.
Pelaez has been President of COPACI since 1991 and this will be his last term as President.
The other positions filled were area Vice Presidents.
For the Caribbean Trinidad’s Rowena Williams claimed the spot over St. Lucian Cyril Mangal.
Jamaica’s Donna-Kaye Sharpe was successful in claiming one of the four spots of the eighteen nominees for COPACI Management Committee.
This is a first for the Jamaica Cycling Federation to have a representative on the COPACI Board.
The Caribbean has a total of Five representatives on the COPACI Board.
Sharpe is Jamaica’s elected representative on both the Caribbean Cycling Union and COPACI board.
As the Federation struggles with the reality of not having a velodrome at the Independence Park facility shortly the issue has already been escalated to the regional cycling affiliates who has already committed to work with the Ministry of Sports on a solution and await a response from the Ministry for an urgent meeting to discuss the resolution.
