Dacres Wins Men’s Discus on Opening Day of NACAC Championships

Fedrick Dacres threw 65.10 metres to win the men’s discus on the opening morning of the fifth NACAC Athletics Championships in Freeport Bahamas.

It was gold and bronze for Jamaica as Chad Wright secured third with 62.85 metre.

The victory would have been bitter/sweet for Dacres who’s still without the World Championship qualifying standards of 67.50m with the cut off date of August 24 looming.

Meanwhile, Jodean Williams and Jonielle Smith are both into the final of the women’s 100 metres. Williams won her heat in 11 seconds flat while Smith was second in hers in 11.21 seconds.

Rahiem Forde is through to the men’s final after posting 10.24 seconds in his semi-final. He goes into the final with the third fastest time. Shakur Williams logged 10.44 seconds and failed to advance.

National champion and record holder Rusheen McDonald is through to the men’s 400 metre final and he does so with the second fastest time after posting 45.48 seconds Friday morning.

McDonald is chasing the 44.85 seconds time for World Championship automatic qualification.

Delano Kennedy is also through to the final as one of the fastest losers with his 45.59 seconds clocking Friday morning.

In the women’s event, national champion Nickisha Pryce was an easy winner of her semi-final in 50.39 seconds. Dejanea Oakley missed out on a spot in the final after posting 52.10 seconds.

Sanique Walker and Janieve Russell are through to the women’s 400 metre hurdles final after posting times of 54.20 seconds and 56.80 seconds respectively.
