A community-driven effort to tackle the growing environmental threat of sargassum will be launched this weekend in Dangriga Town. The Sargassum Removal Campaign, organized under the powerful slogan “Together, we protect what protects us!”, aims to clear large amounts of the seaweed that have accumulated along the coast, threatening the local marine ecosystem and the integrity of the shoreline. The campaign, led by concerned residents and environmental advocates, is a direct response to the worsening sargassum problem affecting Dangriga’s beaches. The invasive seaweed has contributed to beach erosion, disrupted marine life, and jeopardized the health of Belize’s iconic barrier reef system. Love News spoke with community activist Brianna Boyd on how they will go about with the cleanup campaign.
The event will begin at the Dangriga Pier at 6am. Those willing to contribute or get involved can reach out to organizer Brianna Boyd via Instagram or by email at bluemarlin.bri@gmail.com.
