The Dangriga Town Council is calling on the community to support the upcoming efforts to clear sargassum off the beach and shoreline. Recently, huge sargassum mats have been affecting various areas in Belize, bringing with them a pungent, rotting odor. A special cleanup campaign is being launched in Dangriga on Saturday; however, the council intends to carry on sargassum removal activities well into next week. Dangriga Mayor Robert Mariano says that the level of sargassum in Dangriga is unprecedented and that the public’s assistance is needed to help address this serious problem.
Saturday’s clean-up is being organized by community activist Brianna Boyd and will commence at the Dangriga pier at 6:00 a.m./
