Dangriga Mayor Honoured by Atlanta City Council for Public Service

Dangriga Mayor Robert Mariano has received an official proclamation from the Atlanta City Council in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, recognizing his public service and efforts to strengthen international cooperation between the two municipalities.  The proclamation, dated July 15, was issued by members of the Atlanta City Council on behalf of the residents of Atlanta. It was presented to Mayor Mariano by Erica-Antoinette Castillo Slaton, Foreign Affairs Ambassador for the Dangriga Town Council.  The document recognizes Dangriga as the Cultural Capital of Belize and the heart of the Garifuna community. It highlights the town’s role in preserving Garifuna traditions, language, music, dance and history, while acknowledging the influence of Garifuna culture throughout the Caribbean, Central America and the United States.  Mayor Mariano was honoured for his commitment to community development, strengthening local government, preserving cultural heritage and advancing initiatives intended to improve the quality of life of Dangriga residents. The proclamation also acknowledges the contributions of Atlanta’s Belizean and Garifuna communities in education, business, public service and the arts.  The document bears the signature of Atlanta City Council President Marci Collier Overstreet and the Council’s fifteen members.
