JAMAICA HAVE set up a tense promotion battle against Puerto Rico at the 2025 Davis Cup after an almost perfect start to the competition with wins over Honduras and Venezuela in Pool B of the Americas Group III tier.
This year’s staging, held at the Costa Rica Country Club in San José, Costa Rica, saw Jamaica drawn in Pool B alongside Puerto Rico, Honduras and Venezuela.
The winners from each pool will be promoted to the Americas Group II tier next year, joined by the winner of a promotion playoff between the two second-placed teams in the pool.
The two teams who finished fourth in the pools, however, will be relegated to Group IV next year.
Jamaica, seeking a promotion, began their campaign with a 2-1 win over Honduras on Wednesday.
John Chin earned Jamaica’s first point when he took down Honduran Alejandro Obando in straight sets, winning the first two sets 6-1.
Blaise Bicknell followed in Chin’s example in game two as he also won in straight sets, getting by Guillermo Bennaton 6-1 and 6-0.
Honduras would rally to earn a point during match three, however, as the pair of Mario Richmagui and Keny Turcios took down the Jamaican duo of Daniel Azar and Nicholas Gore.
The Hondurans had taken the first set 6-0 before Jamaica levelled the score, taking the second set 6-4. Pushing the game into a third and deciding set, Honduras prevailed, winning 6-4 to snatch the point at the end.
Jamaica continued their winning form into yesterday’s encounter against Venezuela, recording an identical 2-1 win.
Chin continued his winning form, coming from a set down to get the better of Oscar Freitas in the opening match.
Freitas took the first set 6-4, before Chin rallied to win 6-0 and 6-1.
It was a similar story in the second match between Bicknell and Ignacio Parisca, who took the first set in a 7-3 tie-breaker after the two traded blows to end 6-6. That was Parisca’s last chance, as Bicknell went on to win the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The final match went the way of the Venezuelans as Freitas partnered with Angel Hernandez to sweep past Azar and Gore in straight sets 6-2, 6-2).
The result means Jamaica will face group leaders Puerto Rico in the final Pool B game for automatic promotion to Group II.
Puerto Rico also holds a perfect record in the competition, defeating Venezuela 2-1 before getting by Honduras 3-0.
The match will be played today on the indoor court at the Costa Rica Country Club.
