Dean Flowers Re-Elected PSU President for Historic Third Term

The Public Service Union of Belize (PSU) is seeing a mix of new and returning faces for its newly elected executive board. The executive was elected over the weekend at the union’s 103rd annual General Meeting Held in the City of Belmopan. Dean Flowers returns for a historic third term as president, which also marks his last term in that position. Cynthia Villagrant was endorsed as second vice president after Shane Reneau withdrew his candidacy. Cordelia Belizaire, former assistant secretary general, was endorsed as Secretary General since no one ran against her. Following Belizaire’s assent, the executive will need to make a one-year appointment, since no one ran for assistant secretary general. Emmet Cordon beat out Emmanuel Yam for assistant national treasurer. Marika Zuniga returned as councilor, and Sabrina Muschamp was elected as trustee. President Flowers spoke with our newsroom about the vision for the 2025-2027 term.

Dean Flowers, President, PSU: “We have a lot more work to do of course to ensure that our membership understands that we have a duty and responsibility to do our part to improve public services. We have a duty and an obligation to whistle blow against our fellow public officers who are engaged in corruption which ultimately impacts the quality of public service we deliver. We have much more work to do to reach out to the Belizean people to let them know that we live in a democracy that must be participatory and not one that is simply passive. Over the next two years then my primary focus will be towards establishing a brand new headquarters in Belmopan for the Public Service Union of Belize. I believe that I’ve laid a solid foundation to see that project through as well as a multi office complex in the Orange Walk district. Those two projects will be my priorities in this second term.”

The AGM was held from August 15 and 6 under the theme, ‘PSU 103 Partners in Service, Serving in Purpose, Building with Pride, and Championing Change.’ The event saw presentations from guest speakers Coretta Banner, Deputy Mayor of Belmopan, and Attorney Dickie Bradley.
