Defending champions open JWPL in dominant fashion

DEFENDING JAMAICA Women’s Premier League (JWPL) champions Frazsiers Whip got their title defence under way in dominant fashion, battering UWI Mona Women’s 6-0 yesterday at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Reggae Girl Davia Richards scored a hat-trick (33rd, 45+6, and 47th) to top the scoresheet for Frazsiers Whip as Cassandra Smith (45+10), Danishca Rattray (51st), and Destiny Powell (80th) also added to the tally.

Richards opened the scoring for the defending champions just past the half-hour mark after a brilliant pass from Smith found her running through on goal to finish at the near post.

UWI were forced to make a first-half substitution as Nethaniah Alleyne was stretchered off the park after an errant ball struck her in the face.

The substitution caused a lengthy delay which resulted in 11 minutes of time added to the first half.

The duo of Smith and Richards would combine again for the game’s second, the former orchestrating yet another brilliant assist for Richards.

Smith returned four minutes later, still in time added, skipping past her marker out wide to blast home her first goal of the contest.

The champions had a quick start to the second half as Richards bagged her hat-trick two minutes after the restart, finishing from close range after a poor clearance from the UWI defence.

Rattray joined in on the action as she latched on to a through pass in the box to slip a near-post finish past UWI custodian Chris-Ann Chambers.

The reigning champions would take a while to find their sixth of the afternoon with Excelsior High standout, Powell, showing off some brilliant footwork to round three defenders and the goalkeeper to tap into an empty net.

Davion Megan, head coach of UWI Mona, took some positives from the game despite the heavy defeat, lauding his player’s attitude against the defending champions.

He said the heavy scoreline is indicative of the work they will need to do, as several of his players are newcomers to the league.

“It was always going to be difficult and it is a hard one to take, but it is better to do it here and go back to the drawing board,” Megan said in his post-match interview.

“I take a lot of positives from this game. Most of these players are making their debut, so now they understand what it will take to compete in this league. I’ll take that as a positive and I already hear them making certain comments, which is good.”

In other matches on opening day, Los Perfectos defeated Federal United 6-1 at Spanish Town Prison Oval with U20 Reggae Girl Andrene Smith bagging a hat-trick.

Mile Gully and Real MoBay played out a 3-3 draw in a six-goal thriller at Jarrett Park while Wifi United and Proven Girls could not find a decider in their 2-2 draw.
