DENBIGH HIGH School defended their home turf, shocking Clarendon College in the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition yesterday.

Denbigh’s win put them on 16 points, three behind Zone leaders Central High School, who came from behind to beat Lennon 3-2 and two behind second-place Clarendon College, on 18. The third-place team in Zone H is through to the daCosta Cup second round.

In an exciting encounter before a large crowd, Clarendon College took the lead in the 34th minute through Justin Hayles, who beat two defenders inside the 18-yard box before kicking past the goalkeeper.

Despite falling behind, Denbigh fought back gallantly to draw level in the 45th minute when Odaine Thompson scored from close range after receiving Rajae Jaganaught’s free kick from 40 yards out.

Denbigh were more purposeful at the restart and were rewarded in the 69th minute taking the lead via a penalty.

Lashawn Barnaby, coolly slotted home the spot kick, earned after Clarendon College goalkeeper Marco Thompson was red-carded for elbowing a Denbigh player.

Playing with 10 players for the remaining 21 minutes, Clarendon College tried desperately to get back on even terms but were denied by good defensive work from Denbigh skipper Marlon Murray and Suwayne Miller.

Losing coach of Clarendon College Lenworth Hyde gave credit to the Denbigh team.

“It was a very exciting game. The guys tried hard but they gave up some simple chances, but credit to Denbigh as they defended well,” said Hyde.

Winning coach Garfield Carney was elated.

“This is a very good victory for both the team and the community as the guys played well. After going behind, they did not panic and fought gallantly. The win ensures that the team has advanced to the second round,” said Carney.
