The Belize district has seen more than 300 cases of dengue this year, taking up the majority of the total cases for the entire country in 2025. Data from the Ministry of Health and Wellness shows that for Epidemiological Week number 29, which ended on July 19, the national total for dengue cases was 357. Meanwhile, the Belize district recorded 307 cases, most of which originate from the south side of Belize City. Further analysis of the data shows that for the same 29-week period in 2024; the Belize district had only 84 cases. This means that dengue cases are up 262 percent in the Belize district from last year. Director of Public Health and Wellness, Dr. Melissa Diaz Musa, is calling on the public to play their part in the fight against dengue by getting rid of mosquito breeding sites in their yards.

Dr.Melissa Diaz Musa, Director of Public Health and Wellness: “With the surveillance aspect of it we do monitor many of our diseases on a weekly basis, it’s called the endemic cancels and when we look at Dengue we know that for the same period last year the number of country cases has reduced however when we look at the districts the Belize district has shown over 200% increase in the last two weeks. So we know that there is ongoing transmission of Dengue. There is an outbreak in the Belize district and we have increased the interventions that we’re doing. We’re getting help from Northern Health Region in terms of bringing in staff to help us to break this transmission and we’re advocating to the public to please ensure that your yards are clean, that you don’t have any reservoirs holding stagnant water, that your drains are clean because these are areas where this vector can reproduce and spread the disease.”
Notably, the total number of cases nationally has dropped significantly when compared to last year. The data says that the national total for week 29 is down 46.8 percent compared to 2024, when the national total was 900 cases.
