Deputy Prime Minister Welcomes Planned Belize-Frankfurt Air Connection

Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde has welcomed Belize’s planned air connection with Frankfurt, Germany, describing it as a breakthrough successive governments had pursued for years. Speaking yesterday, Hyde acknowledged that securing the service requires a financial commitment from Belize, but said the expectation is that the economic benefits will outweigh that investment.

Cordel Hyde, Deputy Prime Minister: “It’s a big deal. It’s a big deal. You know, successive governments over the long years have tried to get it and we’re finally able to get it. A story goes with it. Of course, there has to be an investment on our part. But people in the know, people in the industry believe that the return from that investment will exceed the investment and we’re very hopeful that that will be the case. We are confident in our product here that once people come here, they’ll want to come back.”

Discover Airlines, the Lufthansa Group’s leisure carrier, plans to begin the seasonal service on December sixteenth, 2027. Flights are scheduled twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays, through mid-April 2028. The airline says tickets will become available in mid-December this year.  The announced routing includes a stop in another Central American destination before arriving in Belize. Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler has said the agreement involves approximately two million US dollars over three years, with a revenue guarantee forming part of the arrangements to share the airline’s financial risk.  Tourism officials see the service as an opportunity to expand Belize’s European visitor market and reduce its dependence on North America. Hyde said he is confident in Belize’s appeal and believes visitors who experience the country will want to return.
