Lawyers for Jamaica Labour Party deputy leader, Desmond McKenzie, have filed a defamation suit against People’s National Party, PNP, caretaker for North West St. Catherine, Senator Damion Crawford.

The lawsuit relates to comments made by Crawford at a PNP meeting on March 2 this year.

Crawford, who is a former PNP vice-president, raised the possibility of theft at the equalisation fund and made comments about Mr. McKenzie.

During the same presentation, Crawford also made comments about Mr. McKenzie’s character and cast aspersions about McKenzie’s level of truthfulness.

The legal team for Mr. McKenzie filed proceedings against Crawford in the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston on Tuesday.

They are seeking aggravated and exemplary damages, costs and interest pursuant to the Law Reform Miscellaneous Provisions Act.

Mr. McKenzie is the Member of Parliament for West Kingston and the country’s local government minister.

One of his attorneys, Lemar Neale, noted in the court documents that the minister’s exemplary record of service to Jamaica has been brought into disrepute by Crawford’s allegations.

Senator Crawford had responded in March to Mr. McKenzie’s letter of demand a few weeks ago by posting on social media an image of King’s Counsel Ransford Braham and stated – “that KC on my uncle’s name does not mean Kingston College brother Desmond”.
